Two Tips for Those Who Are Taking Up BJJ

If you've decided to join a BBJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) club, here are some tips you'll probably find helpful.

Consider asking some friends to come with you to the first few classes

It might be both fun and helpful to invite some friends to join you for the first few BJJ classes you take. You will probably spend a lot of of your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions grappling; this is an activity that involves being in very close physical contact with your opponent, whilst you put your body into various positions in an attempt to overpower them.

If you're not a tactile person or if you're shy, it may take you a while to get used to the experience of grappling with the other club members that you're not yet very well acquainted with, and you may find yourself feeling a bit too awkward to concentrate on the instructor's words or on mastering the grappling positions you're trying to hold.

Whilst you will likely adjust to grappling very quickly and will, after a few weeks of regular practise, have no qualms about being so close to your opponents, it may be helpful to grapple with your friends, whom you already know and are used to being physically near, initially. This will allow you to ease your way into this key aspect of BJJ in a gentle manner that won't deter you from returning to the club.

Be mindful of upcoming events when deciding what days to practise BJJ

If you are going to be attending any events at which you need to look neat and well-presented, you should take these into account when deciding which days to practise BJJ. It is virtually impossible to partake in this type of combat sport without sustaining the occasional bruise or graze. For example, every once in a while when you're grappling, you may get elbowed or lightly kicked in the face by your opponent. Whilst these grazes and bruises won't do you any permanent harm, they may take several days to heal.

As such, it's best to assume that you might sustain a cut or bruise during any practice sessions you partake in and keep this in mind on those weeks when you want to attend events where your appearance matters. This will ensure that you can schedule your BJJ sessions for after these events and will not, therefore, have to go to a friend's wedding or a job interview with a cut lip or a bruised eye.
